Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and diced
  • 6 to 8 tablespoons ice water
  • 6 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour, salt, and sugar. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Stir in ice water, a tablespoon at a time, until mixture forms a ball. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight.
  4. Roll out half the dough on a floured surface and cut into circles.
  5. In another bowl, toss apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice.
  6. Place apple mixture on half of the dough circles, then cover with remaining circles. Seal edges.
  7. Cut slits in the tops to allow steam to escape. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, consider adding a pinch of cardamom to the apple mixture.
